2018 Summer Conversational Series & Teacher Workshop

Little Women in the 21st Century:  Celebrating 150 Years of Inspiration

Louisa May Alcott took up her pen in May of 1868, wrote "Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents," and the classic American novel, Little Women, was born. The book has since been translated into 50 languages and transformed into countless stage plays, musicals, films, television series, opera, ballet, and even anime.

Little Women’s enduring universal appeal is a testament to its ability to tackle issues that define the human condition: coming of age and, coming to terms with loss; the importance of family; struggles of conscience; the value of loyalty, friendship, and love; charity and social responsibility; the quest for independence and personal empowerment -- and much more.

Presenters and participants during this year’s Summer Conversational Series will examine why Little Women is still important in the 21st Century, the difference it has made over time in the world of literature, and what it means to readers today.

To be considered as a Presenter, please submit a one-page proposal -- including title, presentation summary, and brief personal bio -- to Director of Education Lis Adams and Executive Director Jan Turnquist at
ladams@louisamayalcott.org and jturnquist@louisamayalcott.org by February 19, 2018Submit a Proposal now

(Note:   Participant registration will be available online after March 1st)

2018 Summer Conversational Series & Teacher Workshop

Little Women in the 21st Century:  Celebrating 150 Years of Inspiration

Nearly 150 years have passed since Louisa May Alcott took up her pen in May of 1868, wrote “Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents,” and the classic American novel, Little Women, was born. The book has since been translated into 50 languages and transformed into countless stage plays, musicals, films, a television series, opera, ballet, and even anime.

Although Alcott initially had doubts that this book would find a readership, publisher Thomas Niles persuaded her to try her hand at a “girls’ story,” and the gamble paid off:   Little Women has endured the test of time to span three centuries. The book’s universal appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds is a testament to the themes tackled within it: coming of age, dealing with loss, the importance of family, struggles of conscience (jealousy, anger, pride, vanity), loyalty, friendship and love, charity, independence, social responsibility, personal empowerment, and many other issues that define the human condition.

Speakers and participants in this year’s Summer Conversational Series will examine why Little Women is still important in the 21st Century, what difference it has made over time in the world of literature, and what it means to readers today.

Nearly 150 years ago, Louisa May Alcott wrote, “Running was one of the delights of my early days,” proving once again that she was ahead of her time in advocating a healthy lifestyle.  And once again, we are privileged to announce that UTA PIPPIG -- three-time Boston Marathon winner, two-time Olympian, and internationally-recognized fitness motivator -- continues to serve as Honorary Chair of the event and will be in attendance!

Pippig, founder of “Take the Magic Step,” a fitness awareness program and charitable foundation, believes that everyone owes it to themselves and to future generations to take care of their physical well being.  By participating in this particular Walk/Run, Pippig is also paying tribute to health-conscious individuals who have come before us, like the Alcotts.  The family's involvement in major reforms of their day -- such as abolition and women's rights -- also resonates with Uta's motivational presentations on "Running To Freedom."
